Haaland: Rooney was right, I bottled it in the FA Cup final penalty!

Erling Haaland has admitted he made a massive cock-up by not taking the penalty in the FA Cup final.

Manchester City were 1-0 down in the big game at Wembley when they got a spot-kick after some muppet called Tyrick Mitchell fouled Bernardo Silva.

Haaland, who usually takes the penalties, picked up the ball like he was gonna have a go from 12 yards.

But then the daft sod passed it to Omar Marmoush instead, who had his shot saved by Dean Henderson before City went on to lose.

Wayne Rooney, who knows a thing or two about footy, said on the BBC that he was proper surprised by Haaland's decision.

"Erling Haaland is a world-class forward," said Rooney. "But when we're talking about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there's no way they're giving that ball away."

In an interview with TIME, Haaland agreed with Rooney and said he should've taken the penalty himself.

"I shouldn't have given it to a new player," said the 25-year-old striker. "So it's all on me. I put him in this situation. I had a good feeling about him. But I should have taken it myself."

Haaland has scored 23 out of 28 penalties for City over three seasons. Four of those were scored before the FA Cup final last season, and his boss Pep Guardiola reckoned he'd be the man to level the score.

How Guardiola reacted to Haaland's penalty decision

"They decided on the pitch," the Spaniard revealed afterwards. "I don't know. I didn't speak with them. I thought he [Haaland] would want to take it. These are things for them.

"That moment for the free kick, for the penalty, it's the feeling and how they feel. They decided Omar was ready to take it. Henderson made a good save."

Haaland ended the season with 34 goals in 48 matches across all competitions. His total tally for the club has reached 124, which is just under half of the club's record scorer Sergio Aguero on 260.

Haaland missed out on a third consecutive Premier League Golden Boot last season despite scoring 22 times.
