Earps blasted by Chelsea boss over Hampton comments
Mary Earps has been slammed by Chelsea Women's manager Sonia Bompastor for her comments towards Hannah Hampton in her new autobiography 'All In'. Earps claimed that Hampton was 'disruptive and unreliable' and that her behaviour at Euro 2022 was at risk of becoming 'destructive'.
Bompastor defended her goalkeeper, saying: "For me, Hannah is fine, it's never nice when someone makes these comments about yourself as a person. I think you need to show more respect because, for me, values are important."
The French football icon continued: "I think on Mary Earps' comments, you need to show respect to your teammate, show respect to your manager. Just to give that many details, that's not something I would like to have if I was her."
Bompastor also praised Hampton, saying: "I think she is a great goalkeeper, I already said that she is the best goalkeeper in the world. But also, as a person, I think from when I joined Chelsea, I'm really pleased with who Hannah is and I told her already she should be proud of who she is."
Earps vs Hampton
Earps' frustration at Hampton and England manager Sarina Wiegman stems from the decision to drop her last year. Wiegman opted to play Hampton as her new No.1 before Euro 2025, with Earps' minutes for her country massively dwindling.
In her autobiography, Earps revealed she told Wiegman after Hampton took her spot: "I don't get it. It's a qualifier match. And bad behaviour is being rewarded." Earps was then told that Hampton would be No.1 ahead of the major tournament earlier this summer, and in May, she decided to retire from international football.
Hampton then led England to glory with multiple star performances, saving two penalties in the final before lifting the trophy. She is now hoping for further success with Chelsea, while Earps is No.1 goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain in France.
