Robinho's move to Manchester City was a bloody mess, and the bloke had no idea what the hell he was getting himself into. The beautiful game has seen its fair share of muppets, but this takes the cake.
City's misguided attempt at a game-changing transfer
In 2008, after City's takeover, they were itching to make a statement. They wanted a big-name signing to show they meant business, and they set their sights on Brazil's Robinho. What a load of bollocks that turned out to be.
Breaking the bank for a confused player
City smashed the British transfer record, coughing up £32.5 million for Robinho on Deadline Day in September 2008. The lad didn't even recognise his new boss, Mark Hughes, when they met. Hughes suspects the rumours that Robinho thought he was signing for Manchester United might actually be true. What an absolute mug.
Hughes' suspicions about Robinho's confusion
Hughes recounted the crazy day when City's new owners asked him who he wanted to sign. They had bids out for every top player in the world, including Lionel Messi. In the end, they landed Robinho, but it seems the Brazilian wasn't quite sure who he had signed for. Hughes said, "There's probably a grain of truth in the rumour that Robinho thought he was actually signing for Manchester United." Bellend.
Robinho's blunder continues
After mistaking City for United, Robinho then mixed up City with Chelsea in a press conference. He said, "On the last day, Chelsea made a great proposal and I accepted." A reporter corrected him, asking if he meant Manchester City, and Robinho quickly replied, "Yeah, Manchester, sorry!" This bloke had no clue what the hell he was doing.
Robinho's disappointing spell at City
Robinho turned out to be a massive disappointment at City, scoring just 14 goals in 41 league matches. In his second season, he was relegated down the pecking order and spent three months sidelined with an injury. He managed just one goal against Scunthorpe United in the FA Cup. What a waste of talent and money.
In the end, Robinho sought an exit during the January transfer window and returned to Santos in 2010. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. The beautiful game is better off without muppets like him taking liberties with the sport we all love.
