Wayne Rooney, the former England and Manchester United legend, is reportedly being targeted by Amazon and other big football broadcasters for punditry roles. This comes after his mutual agreement to leave Plymouth Argyle in December.
Rooney's managerial stint at Plymouth
Roooney managed the Championship side for seven months but left at the end of 2024 following a winless run of nine matches. He recently appeared on The Overlap alongside former teammates Gary Neville and Roy Keane to discuss his management career.
Broadcasters eyeing Rooney's expertise
The 39-year-old has featured on the podcast multiple times but could be set for a role elsewhere amid his depth of football experience. Amazon reportedly wants him as a pundit for their coverage of Manchester City vs Real Madrid in the Champions League. However, Amazon could face competition from the BBC's Match of the Day, Sky Sports, and TNT Sports, both of whom have previously had Rooney on their programming.
Rooney's illustrious football career
Rooney enjoyed an illustrious career in professional football, having won five Premier League titles and the Champions League at Old Trafford. He also featured for Everton, DC United, and Derby County, with his 120 England caps the second-highest in the nation's history. The iconic forward announced his retirement in early 2021 when he became the permanent manager at Derby.
Rooney's managerial journey
Rooney secured Derby's Championship safety months later but left at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. The club was relegated to League One following a season in which they were deducted 21 points for administration and financial breaches. The Premier League Hall of Fame inductee then became head coach at DC United, the penultimate club of his playing career. After a year and three-month spell at the MLS club, Rooney returned to English football with an appointment at Birmingham City. However, he won only two of 15 matches in charge across a tenure that spanned less than three months. Rooney enjoyed slightly more success at Plymouth but could not see out the rest of their season as they fight against relegation.
