Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary Manchester United boss, is making a bloody comeback to coaching for one of his former players, Giuseppe Rossi. The Italian striker is having a farewell match at Fiorentina's Stadio Artemio Franchi on March 22, and Ferguson, who signed Rossi for United in 2004, will be there as coach.
Rossi's time at Manchester United
Rossi was just a bloody teenager when Ferguson signed him for Manchester United. He went on to score four goals in 14 first-team appearances for the Red Devils before leaving for Villarreal in 2010. Rossi's career also saw him play for Newcastle, Parma, Fiorentina, Genoa, Real Salt Lake City, and Italian side SPAL, as well as scoring seven goals in 30 caps for Italy.
Ferguson's legacy at Manchester United
Ferguson guided Manchester United to 37 trophies during his time as manager, including 13 league titles and two Champions League triumphs. He retired in 2013 after almost 27 years in charge of the club.
The farewell match
Rossi's farewell match will feature a host of former teammates and Serie A icons, including Luca Toni, Antonio Cassano, Sebastien Frey, Borja Valero, and Gabriel Batistuta. The match has been dubbed 'Pepito Day' after the nickname Rossi earned during his time in Spain.
Ferguson's previous comeback
This won't be the first time Ferguson has returned to the dugout since leaving Old Trafford. In 2019, he made a comeback for a United legends match against Bayern Munich, which saw the Red Devils win 5-0 as they marked the 20th anniversary of their 1999 treble.
It's going to be a bloody good match, and it's great to see Ferguson back in the dugout. Let's hope he can still show those muppets how it's done!
