Wigan Athletic have given Shaun Maloney the boot just hours after their gutless performance against Reading. The Latics are languishing in 16th place in League One, a measly six points above the drop zone. What a load of rubbish!
Maloney pays the price for Wigan's woes
The board couldn't ignore the fact that this season has been an absolute shambles. Home results and performances have been nothing short of pathetic, and the fans expect better. It's no surprise they've decided to swing the axe.
Whelan takes the reins
Glenn Whelan, a man who's played for Stoke and Aston Villa, has been thrown in at the deep end as interim gaffer. He'll have his work cut out trying to turn this shower around. Max Rogers, Maloney's right-hand man, has also been shown the door.
The club's statement tried to put a positive spin on things, thanking Maloney and Rogers for their "service, efforts and dedication". What a load of bollocks. They've been bloody useless, and everyone knows it.
Fans left fuming
Some deluded supporters seem to think sacking Maloney is a mistake. One muppet said it was a "terrible call", while another could only manage a stunned "Wow!". Get a grip, lads. The bloke was taking you nowhere fast.
Maloney took over in January 2023, just in time to oversee the club's relegation from the Championship. Last season, they finished a pathetic 12th in League One, despite changing owners and having an eight-point deduction. Embarrassing.
It's hard to believe that just 12 years ago, Wigan were lifting the FA Cup and enjoying eight straight seasons in the Premier League. How the mighty have fallen. The search for a new manager is already underway, but who'd want to take on this shambles of a club?
Whelan and Barrow: The dream team?
Whelan will be assisted by Graham Barrow, a former Wigan manager and assistant. Good luck to them; they're going to need it. This lot couldn't find the back of the net if their lives depended on it.
The Wigan faithful had better buckle up. It's going to be a bumpy ride as the club tries to claw its way back to something resembling respectability. But with this bunch of useless twats, I wouldn't hold my breath.
