Postecoglou's trophy boast backfires - the mug's deluded!

Postecoglou's cocky pre-season trophy claim has come back to bite him on the arse, hasn't it? The daft mug actually believed his own hype.

Tottenham's trophy hopes hanging by a thread

In a press conference, Postecoglou was grilled about his now infamous comment, with Spurs' trophy hopes now totally fucked unless they can pull off a miracle against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

The Aussie's team are 1-0 down after a s***e first leg in Holland. "I wasn't making anything up. I was asked the question, and I answered it," Postecoglou whinged.

"Critics have used it for their own purposes, suggesting I'm making a bold claim, but I was stating a fact. Usually in my second season, I win things. That's the whole idea. The first year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully, the second year is going to win things."

He knows the Premier League is a different beast, but still reckons the second year should be about pushing forward. But with Tottenham wallowing in 13th after a piss-poor season, his words have come back to haunt him.

Postecoglou's track record

The bloke's got a decent track record, mind. Consecutive Scottish Premiership titles and League Cups at Celtic, and even a FIFA World Coach of the Year nomination. But the Premier League's a different kettle of fish.

He rocked up at Tottenham in the summer of 2023, signing a four-year deal, and started with a tidy unbeaten run. But now his future's hanging in the balance.

Europa League crunch time

Thursday's Europa League clash against AZ is massive for Tottenham's hopes of ending their 17-year trophy drought. Their gutless attacking display in the 1-0 away loss in the first leg has cranked up the pressure.

Despite a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, where they scraped back from 2-0 down, the Cherries' attacking threat was worrying.

Perry Groves reckons anything less than making the quarter-finals could be curtains for Postecoglou. "This is going to be the biggest game of his career on Thursday here against AZ because his job rests on that game," Groves said on some radio show.

"If they go out and don't win that game, he gets the sack, and it might be at the end of the season. But there will be no future for him if they don't win that game and win the Europa League."

The beautiful game, eh? It's a cruel mistress. One minute you're the big swinging d**k, the next you're getting your p***k knocked in the dirt. That's football for you.
