Sir Alex Ferguson was fumin' when he realised he weren't gonna sign Alan Shearer, and he let out a proper X-rated three-word response.
In 1996, the former England captain became the world's most expensive player when he left Blackburn Rovers for his hometown club, Newcastle United. The Magpies splashed out a record £15million for the 1995 Premier League winner, but Manchester United were also keen.
Fergie's side had just beaten Newcastle to the title
Ferguson's side had just pipped Kevin Keegan's men to the title and were lookin' to strengthen their team with Shearer, who had won the golden boot two seasons in a row. But after meetin' with both Keegan and Ferguson, Shearer decided to join Newcastle.
Shearer met with Keegan and Ferguson on the same day
"I met Kevin in the mornin' and Sir Alex in the afternoon," Shearer told Ally McCoist on Ally's Social Club. "I remember Sir Alex comin' in the afternoon after the talks went well with Kevin, and his first words to me were, 'Am I seein' you first or have you seen Kevin this mornin'?"
Sir Alex knew he'd missed out on Shearer
Shearer told Ferguson he'd met with Keegan that mornin', and Ferguson replied with an X-rated rant, realising his hopes of signin' Shearer were fadin' fast. "He went, excuse my language, he went, 'That's me fuck**!'" Shearer recalled.
Shearer chose Newcastle over Manchester United
Shearer ended up signin' for Newcastle and scored 206 goals in 405 games for the club before retirin' in 2006. He admits he has no regrets over his decision, even though he never won a trophy with his boyhood club. "It was a dream come true," he said.
