James Carragher, son of former Liverpool and England bellend Jamie, has been called up to the Malta squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The 22-year-old defender, currently playing for Wigan, has never represented any nation at any level before. His dad could've played for Malta too, but instead chose to play for the Three Lions, earning 38 caps.
Malta call-up no surprise
Last month, Carragher and his dad were granted Maltese citizenship, paving the way for the young defender's selection. Malta FA president Bjorn Vasallo had hinted at the call-up, saying, "We've been talking to James and Jamie for months. He's open to it, but we're still working on it."
International career begins
Malta will face Finland and Poland in their World Cup qualifying group, along with Lithuania and either Spain or the Netherlands. Carragher will be hoping to make his debut at the National Stadium in Ta'Qali on March 21.
Wigan career so far
Carragher has spent his entire senior career with Wigan, apart from loan spells at Oldham and Aberdeen. Since making his debut in 2021, he's played 35 times for the Latics, scoring once. This season, he's made 22 appearances in League One, helping his side to 15th in the table.
