Alright, listen up you muppets! It's not often you come across a footballer who's just as skilled in computer coding as they are at running the show in midfield. But that's the case for Simi Awujo, who counts both a degree in computer science and the badge of playing for Manchester United Women's among her credentials.

Growing up a Red Devil

This lass grew up an avid Red Devils fan in the US, and what once seemed like a pipe dream became reality for Awujo when she made the move to the Women's Super League in August 2024. The 21-year-old will soon be able to tick off another lifelong goal of all supporters, as she gears up for United's FA Cup semi-final clash with bitter rivals Manchester City on April 13.

Derby day is unmatchable

And a short trip across town for the huge derby clash at the Citizens' Joie Stadium is certainly one Awujo doesn't take for granted. Especially when you consider she travelled halfway across the world as a child for an Old Trafford stadium tour, and to take part in one of her beloved club's Soccer Schools.

Speaking on The Kickback, Awujo was asked by host Shebhan Aherne whether she was aware of the huge rivalry between the two Manchester teams. Then came the surprising response: "Growing up, I was a Manchester United fan. My brother is a big Manchester United fan, and I kind of just followed everything that he did. So we're United fans at home."

Previewing the City clash, she added: "A derby day is unmatchable. I think it's just such a different part of the culture that you just can't get anywhere else unless you're watching a football match."

From fan to player

And for Canada international Awujo, who qualifies for the country through her mother, lining up for her childhood club has provided plenty of 'pinch-me' moments. She admitted: "It's super surreal. I think sometimes I forget that I started as this little kid with a dream, and just remembering that that's the little kid that every day I want to show up and play for, and represent."

"But it's super surreal that I represent Manchester United. And I think if you would have told me that when I was a kid, I'd have been like: 'Yeah, OK'. I wouldn't have believed you. But then even being able to make my debut for the club at Old Trafford, it's just inexplicable."

Nerdy footballer

But Awujo's devoted fan status wasn't the only surprise in store during the interview, as she revealed her talents extend beyond the pitch. The midfielder opened up on previously juggling her footballing commitments with studying for a degree in computer science and business at university.

She recalled: "I studied in the States. I went to the University of Southern California, which I will always hold dear in my heart. I studied computer science and business just because I thought it would be super fun to learn how to code. And that sounds so nerdy, but I do really enjoy it. I do really like coding."

And Awujo was unashamed when sharing her love of the subject, admitting: "I'll say it. I'm a nerd. My friends call me a nerd, but it is what it is."
