Wrexham's exec director Humphrey Ker reckons the mood at the club has turned deadly serious as they close in on a never-before-seen feat of three back-to-back promotions. The Welsh side's incredible journey from non-league to potentially the Championship has been nothing short of miraculous, but Ker admits the pressure is mounting as they climb the football pyramid.
Ker: We're taking it seriously
"We've always taken our responsibility to the town and team seriously," Ker told some bellend from the media. "Rob [McElhenney] and Ryan [Reynolds] got it spot on from the start, backing the people who know what they're doing. But as we've gone up the leagues, the numbers get bigger and expectations get larger. That brings added pressure."
Wrexham on the brink of history
Co-owned by Hollywood muppets Reynolds and McElhenney since 2021, Wrexham needed two attempts to escape the fifth tier. But since then, they've been on a rampage, spending just one season in League Two before sitting pretty in the League One automatic promotion spots.
If they can hold their nerve and reach the Championship, it'll be the first time a team has achieved three consecutive promotions in the top five tiers. Not bad for a club that spent 15 years wallowing in non-league obscurity.
Keeping feet on the ground
Despite the history books beckoning, Ker insists Wrexham aren't getting ahead of themselves. "You can't discount Stockport or Charlton, who are both flying," he said. "If we or Wycombe go off the rails, they could sneak up the inside. We'll take it a game at a time."
With League One leaders Birmingham already promoted, Wrexham are three points clear of Wycombe in the race for the remaining automatic spot. Five games stand between them and an unprecedented achievement.
From non-league to the brink of the Championship
The last time Wrexham graced the second tier was back in 1982, a distant memory for even the most diehard fans. Now, they're on the cusp of a return, a remarkable turnaround for a club that's seen its fair share of dark days.
But in the cut-throat world of football, sentiment counts for nothing. Wrexham's fairy tale rise is on a knife-edge, and only time will tell if they can complete their extraordinary journey from non-league nobodies to Championship contenders.
