Tottenham are having a shocker of a season in the Premier League, sitting in 15th place with just 37 points. It's an absolute disgrace, and if it weren't for their decent run in the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou would probably be out on his arse by now. But the question remains: if they finish 17th and win the Europa, will that be enough to save his job?
Postecoglou's future at Tottenham
Jamie O'Hara reckons that if Postecoglou can deliver a trophy, he'll keep his job, regardless of how shite they are in the league. But Jason Cundy disagrees, arguing that the league form is what really matters. To be honest, I'm with Cundy on this one. Winning the Europa would be nice, but it doesn't change the fact that they've been absolutely woeful in the league.
Tottenham's priorities
At the end of the day, the Premier League should be the priority for Tottenham. They're one of the biggest clubs in England, and they should be challenging for the top four every season. Instead, they're languishing in the bottom half of the table, and it's just not good enough. Postecoglou needs to sort it out, or he'll be gone, Europa League or not.
Postecoglou's personality
One thing that's been pointed out is Postecoglou's miserable demeanor. He always looks like he's got a face like a smacked arse, and it's not exactly inspiring confidence in the players or the fans. He needs to lighten up a bit and show some passion. Maybe then, Tottenham might actually start playing like they give a toss.
What's next for Tottenham?
Tottenham have got a big few weeks coming up. They host Nottingham Forest on Monday, which is a must-win game if they want to start climbing the table. Then they've got Liverpool away, which is always a tough one. And then it's the Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt. If they can get through that, they'll be in the final, and who knows, maybe they'll even win it. But like I said, it won't mean much if they're still crap in the league.
The bottom line is that Tottenham need to start performing in the Premier League. The Europa League is a nice distraction, but it's not the be-all and end-all. If Postecoglou can't get them playing well in the league, he'll be out of a job, simple as that. And you know what? Maybe that's what they need. A fresh start with a new manager who actually knows what he's doing. Because right now, it's just not working with Postecoglou at the helm.
