Jay Rodriguez could be getting his hands on two promotion medals this season, all thanks to some poncy EFL rule.

Wrexham's rapid rise

The 35-year-old has been instrumental in helping the Red Dragons secure their third consecutive promotion, booking their place in next season's Championship. The lads only went and smashed Charlton 3-0 at the SToK Racecourse, with those Hollywood muppets Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watching from the stands.

A trophy and medals for everyone

As part of the celebrations, Wrexham were presented with a fancy trophy, and each player got a medal, including Rodriguez who only signed for the club in January on an 18-month deal from his hometown club Burnley. The former England international left Burnley in the midst of their promotion-clinching campaign, with Premier League football once again returning to Turf Moor.

The EFL's medal rule

Rodriguez played in 20 Championship games for Burnley, scoring twice, before his switch to Wrexham where he's clocked up 17 appearances for the Welsh club. Thanks to a rule in the EFL handbook, Rodriguez could be bagging himself two medals this season. The rule states that a player must feature on a club's team sheet for 25 per cent of their league games to be eligible for a medal.

Which medals will Rodriguez receive?

It remains to be seen which medals Rodriguez will actually get his hands on as the season draws to a close. Burnley can still leapfrog Leeds and clinch the Championship title this weekend, but they'll have to beat Millwall at home to have any chance of doing so. If they manage to better Leeds' result at Plymouth, then Rodriguez would be entitled to a winners medal on top of his League One runners up medal.

Wrexham's celebrations

Rodriguez and his Wrexham teammates partied hard into the early hours of Saturday night after sealing promotion. Guided by the finances and glamour of Reynolds and McElhenney, Wrexham have reached the Championship one year earlier than planned. Reacting to their historic feat, Reynolds reflected on the journey he's been on since taking charge of the club four years ago, saying "We've had the honour to scatter ashes of loved ones across that field. I've even watched every available hand shovel snow off the pitch to keep a match from cancellation."
