Former Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has been spotted playing guitar at Gray's Monument in the city centre.

Jonas Gutierrez: From Newcastle hero to city centre busker

The ex-Magpies star was a hugely popular figure during his time at St James' Park, but now it seems he's taken up a new hobby - busking on the streets of the city.

Fans joke about Gutierrez's "side quests"

Fans have been joking about Gutierrez's new hobby, with some suggesting he's "doing side quests" after popping up in the city centre. The former midfielder posted a clip on social media of him busking and going completely unnoticed by the Geordies walking by.

"My City, my home. I am a Geordie, I love this city, I love this people," he wrote as he shared a video on Instagram. "Thanks for everything Newcastle, a dream come true playing guitar at the monument."

Gutierrez's popularity remains strong

Despite his new hobby, Gutierrez remains a fan favourite among Newcastle supporters. Many fans have embraced him within the comments on his Instagram post, proving how much of a fan favourite he remains.

"Too many young fans walking past you and not realising the legend that you are," one comment read. Another fan posted: "My Spiderman. I will never forget what you did for us and remembering watching that West Ham goal from the Gallowgate end still gives me chills."

That goal secured Newcastle Premier League survival for the upcoming 2015/16 season. "Love it Jonas," said a supporter. "I'll never forget all your effort and desire you gave to our club for the fans, especially coming back from Illness to keep us up, you'll never be forgotten. Once a Geordie always a Geordie."

Gutierrez's time at Newcastle

The Argentine joined the Magpies in January 2008 aged 24 from RCD Mallorca for an undisclosed fee. In his first Premier League season, Newcastle suffered relegation but he stayed and helped them earn immediate promotion back to the top flight.

Gutierrez played at St. James' Park for six years before his January loan move to Norwich where he was reunited with former Newcastle head coach, Chris Hughton. The illness the fan referred to was Gutierrez's battle with testicular cancer which he was diagnosed with in 2013. In 2016 he won his discrimination tribunal case against Newcastle who he claimed dropped him because of his cancer diagnosis.

In 2015, after 177 appearances for Newcastle, Gutierrez returned to Spain to play for Deportivo de La Coruna.
