Gabby Agbonlahor, that muppet, was left heartbroken on live radio after his Premier League goals record for Aston Villa was smashed to pieces by Ollie Watkins. The lad scored with a low finish in first half stoppage-time, securing a 1-0 win away at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth. This goal marked Watkins' 75th for the club in the Premier League, surpassing Agbonlahor's 74 goals.
Agbonlahor's Meltdown on Air
Agbonlahor, now part of the radio family, made an appearance on the GameDay Phone-In, calling up at half-time after witnessing his beloved Villa record slip away. "I nearly started crying when it went in. I was like, 'Lino, offside lino!'" he blubbered to Jamie O'Hara and Jason Cundy after they joked he was no longer a legend at Villa.
Watkins Takes the Top Spot
Watkins has taken the top spot in the Villa scoring charts, and it's no wonder Agbonlahor is gutted. He even joked about getting three bottles of Prosecco on his own, devastated by the turn of events. Watkins has scored his 75 goals for Villa across 182 Premier League matches since signing from Brentford in September 2020, beating Agbonlahor's record in 140 fewer games.
Champions League Hopes Alive
The 29-year-old's latest strike for the club could be a massive boost for their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Villa are now up into sixth in the Premier League, level on 63 points with fifth-placed Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League spot and are ahead only on goal difference. Nottingham Forest, currently in seventh, will overtake them though should they win against Leicester City on Sunday.
With Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United as their final two opponents, the pressure is on for Villa to secure their spot in the Champions League next season. Even if they lose their next two games, they have guaranteed themselves they will at least be playing in the UEFA Conference League next term.
