Sunderland are considering the return of their former player Jordan Henderson after securing promotion to the Premier League, according to reports.
Henderson's Homecoming?
The Black Cats' hierarchy are aware that Henderson, who is currently with Ajax, is likely to leave the Dutch side this summer. They believe his experience would be invaluable to their young squad as they prepare for life in the top flight.
Henderson, who will turn 35 next month, is understood to be open to a return to the Stadium of Light, where he started his career before moving to Liverpool in 2011. During his 12 years at Anfield, he won every major trophy available, including the Premier League and Champions League.
A Controversial Move
In 2023, Henderson made a controversial move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, spending just six months in the Middle East before joining Ajax. Despite being named captain at the Dutch club, their season ended in disappointment as they missed out on the Eredivisie title, surrendering a nine-point lead with five matches remaining.
Returning to His Roots
Former Sunderland striker and chairman Niall Quinn has urged the club to bring Henderson back, saying, "It's not my business to do anything but just comment on that. But wouldn't it be something else?"
Quinn added, "I think he's been a credit to the game, his hard work and his team play. He's a real sort of driver. To see him lift that Champions League trophy, I think made everybody in Sunderland very proud."
Even former teammate Darren Bent had a feeling Henderson would head back to the north east, saying, "I just feel going back to Sunderland makes sense. That's his club, that's where he started, that's where I played with him, and I'm sure the fans would love him back."
Keeping Bellingham
Meanwhile, Sunderland are keen to keep Jobe Bellingham, who has held talks with Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund. The young midfielder is seen as a key part of their plans for the future.
