Benjamin Mendy gets the boot from FC Zurich, and it's about bloody time!
Contract terminated after five months
The Swiss club finally came to their senses and kicked Mendy to the curb, terminating his contract a mere five months after his arrival. It's a shocker, matey, but not entirely unexpected given his track record.
Off-field antics lead to downfall
According to some mug at Mundo Deportivo, the decision to give Mendy the boot was due to his off-field behaviour. Club chiefs were fuming after the Frenchman allegedly decided to attend a party in April, just hours after Zurich had suffered a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to rivals Basel. Talk about taking liberties!
That match proved to be Mendy's last for the club, as he conveniently suffered a season-ending muscle injury. It's like he couldn't handle the pressure and decided to throw in the towel. What a muppet!
With Mendy out of the picture, Zurich managed to win all five fixtures following the league's split and avoid relegation. Just goes to show that they were better off without him weighing them down.
Ex-boss slams Mendy's performance and attitude
Before Mendy's exit, former Zurich boss Ricardo Moniz didn't hold back in his assessment of the 31-year-old. Moniz said, "Mendy didn't perform as expected of a player of his calibre. His physical condition isn't up to what we expect from a player in this league."
Regarding the alleged partying in April, Moniz added, "After a 4-0 defeat, you can't afford to do that to the fans." It's clear that Mendy's priorities were not in the right place, and he disrespected the beautiful game and its supporters.
Moniz left Zurich in May and has since been replaced by former Manchester United assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag. Let's hope the new gaffer can bring some much-needed stability to the club after Mendy's disastrous stint.
Mendy's troubled past
Before heading to Switzerland, Mendy spent just over 18 months in his homeland with Lorient. He returned to France from City in 2023, making 15 appearances for the club and scoring twice. Not exactly impressive numbers for a player with his pedigree.
Mendy had joined Lorient after being found not guilty of seven counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault. It's a dark cloud that continues to hang over his head, and it's no wonder that his off-field issues have followed him to Zurich.
Despite his troubled past, Mendy won 11 trophies during six years as a City player, including four Premier League titles. But that was then, and this is now. The football world has moved on, and it's time for Mendy to face the consequences of his actions.
