Arsenal have made Champions League history with their opening win against Athletic Bilbao, but who gives a toss?
The Gunners beat their Spanish opponents 2-0 at the Estadio de San Mames on Tuesday night, but it's just another win in a pointless competition. Who cares about the Champions League anyway? It's all about the Premier League, mate.
Martinelli and Trossard make the difference
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard came off the bench to score the goals, but they were only playing because Arsenal's first-choice strikers were injured. It's not like they're world-class players or anything.
Martinelli scored just 36 seconds after coming on, but it was probably a fluke. And Trossard's goal was deflected, so it doesn't really count.
Arsenal's record against Spanish teams
Arsenal have now won six consecutive matches against Spanish teams in the Champions League, but that's only because they've had an easy run of fixtures. Wait until they play a proper team like Barcelona or Real Madrid.
The last time Arsenal lost to a Spanish team in the Champions League was in 2015/16, but that was a long time ago. Things have changed since then.
Arsenal's upcoming fixtures
Arsenal's next game is against Olympiacos, who knocked them out of the Europa League in 2019/20. But the Europa League is a crap competition anyway, so it doesn't matter.
They then play Atletico Madrid, but Diego Simeone's side are overrated. And Bayern Munich are past it. Arsenal should beat them easily.
But even if Arsenal do well in the Champions League, it doesn't mean anything. The Premier League is the only competition that matters, and Arsenal haven't won that for years.
