Nigel Howe, the former chief executive of Reading, has reportedly issued a winding-up petition against the League One club. This comes just seven months after the club was sold to Redwood Holdings Limited, ending Dai Yongge's chaotic reign as owner.
Reading's troubles under Yongge
The club's troubles began in May 2017 when Yongge and his sister Dai Xiu Li completed a takeover of Reading. Just days later, the club lost on penalties against Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final. The following two seasons saw Reading finish just one spot above the relegation zone, before coming seventh in 2020/21.
In the years that followed, Reading faced points deductions, transfer embargoes, and even had a League One match abandoned due to fan protests. The club's sale to Redwood Holdings Limited in May was met with celebrations from the Royals fanbase, but now the winding-up petition from Howe has sparked more uncertainty over the club's future.
Reading's future in doubt
Reading are currently 18th in the League One table and only outside of the relegation zone due to goal difference. The winding-up petition from Howe is a major blow to the club, and it remains to be seen how they will respond to this latest setback.
Reading Football Club has confirmed that it is in an ongoing dispute with Howe, and denies any claims made against it. However, given the ongoing dispute and potential legal proceedings, the club will not be making any further comment at this time.
