Steven fuck**g Gerrard has pulled out of talks to become the new Rangers manager.
Gerrard had face-to-face negotiations with the Scottish giants to potentially replace Russell Martin as the gaffer.
The Liverpool icon appeared to be closing in on returning to Ibrox after a successful previous spell at the club.
However, he is understood to have been doubtful that this is the correct time to take the job, despite positive talks.
And that meant he decided to step away from Rangers' process of finding a new manager following Martin's departure.
A full agreement was almost reached for him to take over the role.
Gerrard remains open to returning to the Gers in the future, however, they are now going to have to move on to other targets.
But ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager, Danny Rohl, has held talks with the club and is now appearing to be a leading contender.
Rohl departed the Owls after a crisis-filled summer that included transfer embargoes, late wage payments and player revolts.
The German left the club just days before the new Championship season started and has been unattached ever since.
Hearts boss Derek McInnes has also been considered as another possible option to take the hot seat.
Not to be
Gerrard's decision not to take the Rangers job for a second time would have been a tough one to make.
But the England legend opted to pull out upon reflection and has wished his former club the best for the season.
He became manager of the Scots in May 2018, taking over from Graeme Murty in the dugout at Ibrox.
It was his maiden senior managerial role and it could not have gone better, achieving the club's highest league finish in seven years and reaching the Europa League group stages in his first season.
Then, after building in his second campaign, he led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in his third, denying Old Firm rivals their tenth straight success before leaving for Aston Villa.
Gerrard would have been a very popular appointment after his glory at the club, but it appears it was not to be.
Rock and Rohl?
Rohl now looks to be leading the running for the Rangers job after Gerrard made the decision to pull out of talks.
The 35-year-old is awaiting a new role after departing Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in July.
He didn't return for the club's pre-season over the summer amid the club's crisis, before performing an unexpected U-turn.
Rohl eventually appeared in pre-season, but some players were understood to have been left angry by his actions.
And that appeared to be the final nail in his coffin, as he departed soon after with two years still left on his contract.
Rohl is a former Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany national team assistant manager.
Should he become Rangers boss, it would be only the second managerial role of his career.
