Anthony Gordon's cheeky dig at Arsenal has footy fans in stitches after Newcastle's Carabao Cup semi-final win

Newcastle's Anthony Gordon had footy fans in hysterics with his post-match comments following the Magpies' 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. The win sealed a 4-0 aggregate victory for Newcastle, booking their spot in the final.

Gordon's "stay humble" comment sparks banter

After the match, Gordon was asked if Newcastle were mature enough to win a trophy. The winger replied: "I think it's important for us to stay humble now."

The phrase "stay humble" has become a meme in football circles, particularly in the context of the rivalry between Arsenal and Manchester City. The words were famously uttered by City striker Erling Haaland to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after their 2-2 draw last September.

Fans on social media were quick to pick up on Gordon's comments, with many suggesting he was deliberately taking a dig at Arsenal.

Newcastle fans take aim at Arteta

Newcastle supporters also took the opportunity to mock Arteta during the match. After the Arsenal manager blamed the ball for his team's defeat in the first leg, the home fans could be heard chanting: "Mikel Arteta, it must be the ball!"

The Gunners were left frustrated as they failed to break down a resolute Newcastle defence, despite enjoying almost 70 per cent possession.

Howe praises Newcastle's tactical masterclass

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was full of praise for his team's tactical performance, saying: "It was a tough game but tactically we were good. I thought it helped to solidify our plan. We had to retreat at times but we were always in the game."

Howe added that the team's work started on Monday, with the quick turnaround between games helping them prepare.

Newcastle will face either Tottenham or Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, with Spurs currently leading 1-0 going into the second leg at Anfield.
