The beautiful game was marred by a bunch of muppets causing trouble before Inter Milan's match against Genoa. Riot police had to step in and sort out the chaos, using tear gas to break up the bellends who were taking liberties.
Fans causing trouble before kick-off
A group of home supporters decided to target the visiting Inter fans, launching firecrackers and smoke bombs in the street. Three cars were set on fire, along with a van and a scooter. Seven bins were also torched before the coppers intervened.
Two people were injured in the violence, but despite the clashes, the match kicked off as scheduled at 5pm UK time. Inter quickly took the lead through Yann Aurel Bisseck, with Lautaro Martinez adding another later in the half. Genoa pulled one back in the second half, but Inter held on for the win.
Genoa and Inter are not even rivals!
The fan violence is even more baffling considering Genoa and Inter are not direct rivals. Genoa's biggest rivals are Sampdoria, with both teams sharing the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. But Sampdoria currently play in Serie B, so the two sides haven't met in the league since April 2022.
Inter, on the other hand, have rivalries with Milan and Juventus. But that doesn't excuse the behaviour of the fans who caused trouble before the match. It's a disgrace to the beautiful game and those responsible should be banned from attending matches in the future.
Inter return to the top of Serie A
Despite the pre-match violence, Inter's win saw them return to the top of Serie A, ahead of rivals AC Milan. Cristian Chivu's side sit a point clear after 15 matches as they eye a 21st league title. Meanwhile, Genoa are just two points above the relegation zone in 16th.
The match should have been a celebration of the beautiful game, but instead it was overshadowed by the actions of a few idiots. It's a shame that the behaviour of a minority can ruin it for the rest of us who just want to enjoy the footy.
