Sarina Wiegman, the England women's footy boss, has been given an honorary damehood in the New Year's Honours list for her services to the beautiful game. What a load of bollocks!
The Lionesses won the Euros for the second time in a row this summer, beating Spain on penalties in the final. Big bloody deal! They also managed to scrape past Italy in the semis, but who cares?
Wiegman, being a foreigner, has been given an "honorary" damehood. She said: "I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this honour. When I first arrived in England, I could never have imagined the respect and warmth I've experienced from the English people. I deeply thank the fans for their support." Pfft, whatever.
Leah Williamson, the England captain, has become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Good for her, I guess. Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone and Keira Walsh have each become a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Like that means anything!
Wiegman added: "My congratulations go to Alex, Ella, Georgia, Keira, Leah and also Dr Ritan Mehta who have all been celebrated for their brilliant contributions. Our team values mean that when there is recognition for one, then there is recognition for all. I want to pay tribute to every member of our Euro squad." Blah blah blah, give it a rest!
Daniel Levy becomes New Year's honouree
Among the other footballing names to receive an honour is former Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy. The bloke who stepped down in September after nearly 25 years in the job. He's now a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to charity and the community of Tottenham. Must be nice to get an award for doing bugger all!
Clive Tyldesley, the former commentator, is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to broadcasting and charity. Broadcasting and charity? What a joke!
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the ice dancing duo who won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics, have been given a damehood and knighthood respectively for services to ice skating and voluntary service. Ice skating? Who even watches that rubbish?!
So there you have it, the New Year's Honours list is full of the usual suspects. A bunch of overpaid, overrated sportspeople getting gongs for doing their jobs. What a load of old tosh! I'm sick of hearing about it. FOOTBALL IS LIFE, everything else is just noise.
